Translation

Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better.
Meaning: This powerful dua consists of two parts. The first part “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” (To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return) is recited when facing any calamity or loss. It expresses acceptance of Allah’s decree and recognition that everything belongs to Him. The second part is a specific supplication asking Allah for reward in the affliction and for a better replacement. This dua teaches us patience, acceptance of divine decree, and hope in Allah’s mercy. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “No Muslim is struck with calamity and says what Allah has commanded him – ‘Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, Allahumma ajurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha’ (Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and replace it for me with something better) – but Allah will replace it for him with something better.” (Muslim)

Significance and Context

This dua is recommended to be recited when facing any kind of difficulty, loss, or calamity – whether it’s the death of a loved one, loss of property, illness, or any other hardship. The first part (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un) is known as Istirja (seeking return to Allah) and is mentioned in the Quran: “Who, when disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.'” (Quran 2:156)

The second part is a beautiful supplication that transforms a moment of difficulty into an opportunity for spiritual reward. It reflects the believer’s faith that Allah can bring good out of any situation and replace what was lost with something even better. This dua combines patience (sabr) with hope in Allah’s mercy and wisdom.
